Dropping Into a Half-Pipe |

Before you start skating half-pipes, or vert ramps you need to learn to drop in, which briefly is when you put your tail on the coping, so the board is hanging over the edge and then lean in and skate down the ramp. It is best to learn to do this on a smaller ramp and before you try this its also best to just pump up and down the half-pipe starting from the bottom and getting higher till you are almost at the top.
Once you are used to this get up to the top of the ramp and put your board on the coping, with your back foot on the tail and your front foot towards the front of the board. The main technique of dropping in is the leaning forward. You have to be confident enough to do this, otherwise you will just slip back and end up on your arse. It might help if you just try and keep your front hand almost touching the nose until the bottom of the ramp. So as you lean in, put the front wheels down and push in. It is as simple as that. Then just go up to the other end and come back down again. After you have learnt these basics you can start doing some tricks on the coping. |

The most important part of dropping in is commiting yourself as philly said if you dont commit yourself, its a miracle if your arse doesnt dig the floor, but on your first try on a mini ramp, its most certain you will manual down the ramp because you really need to slam the front two wheels too the the ramp.
i found it alot easier to practising dropping in on steep banks first, and also you need the balls to start stepping it up - progressing from mini ramps too 8 foot ramps, which unfortunatly i dont have!
also beware - if your learning in a mini half pipe thing, remember to jump off after uve dropped in, because it sucks getting to the top of the ramp on the other side, and discovering you cant come back down in fakie too easily... |

Nicely done.
Just to continue a little ....
It is all balls, guts, confidence. Good practice, as holden said, is start on roll-ins. Put your tail on the top of the roll-in, and lean as far forward as you can.
Then, move onto a pipe, try not to stand there looking at it, just get up, deck on, lean forward, away you roll.
As for coming back down the other side, you need to learn how to pump first, and be comfortable rolling fakie.
Should cover it ... |

i always find it easier to, if you would 'get to know the ramp'. what i mean, is by pumping the ramp/pipe or any other thing, before trying to drop in. as you may not be used to the sudden drop, whereas you would be, if you had done a little pumping in the ramp beforehand.
this doesnt work for everyone, but it does for me, just do a little pumping before you are thinking of dropping in, and you might just be used to the feel of the ramp, and how the ramp feels to you.
then just step up there, dont think about falling, or people looking at you and laughing, that doesnt matter, what matters is you get the correct balance on the board as you are leaning forward into the ramp/pipe. evenly spread your feet out, i put my feet just on the screws, not directly on the nose, but enough to give stability, and also control. after you have dropped in, try again, and more times to get used to dropping in, and commiting yourself to the dreaded drop, then just move your way on up, and up. |

| You have to lean forward quite a bit and not be afraid of going into the ground. It will prolly seem like it at first but if you just lean forward and ride it out. |
