Hey All,
After recently relocated to Cardigan from Cornwall i am keen to find some waves. My last surf was at Poppit just before christmas, surprisingly was an ace session.

Just wondered if anyone could give me the heads up for other spots to surf. Was hoping to head over Freshwater west on Saturday though have seen that the wind is swinging round. Typical.

Tried hunting out some of the smaller coves etc but cus i'm on my own and always a bit dubious of surfing solo at a new spot.

Any info would be ace,
Hazel

Hi Haze,
Welcome to eryc.

Have you managed to meet any of the locals either around cardigan or down freshie? There are tonnes of spots all up the coast from cardigan. The Bica boys down llangrannog are all cool. Might be an idea to head over there for a dip.

There are a few guys on here from both your way and freshie. Stick around. :)

Hi Haze, welcome!

I'm in Pembrokeshire, surf Fresh West a fair bit, spend the majority of my water time in North Pembs at the moment though, as I'm a Broad Haven North local.

Poppit eh? You must have had it on a good day, I've heard it rarely breaks well there.
Are you into surfing beachies? Reefs? Shallow spots?

Just out of curiosity, why did you move up from Cornwall?

Hey, thank you for that, local knowledge is always a winner.
I'm a beachie surfer, my local break being Gwithian back in Cornwall. But from what i've read about Wales there's a lot of reef breaks, so that'll be fun.
I moved due to work, started a new job over in Cardigan, so pretty lucky to move from one amazing place to another!
Well i'm heading over to Fresh west tomorrow for a peek with the longboard, might be able to get some mush waves.

I used to live in Cornwall, so have surfed Gwithian and Godrevy a gajillion times.

Freshies awesome, haven't surfed there in ages. Checkout Aberporth and Tresaith on a southerly wind when there's a big swell. Llangrannog is too dumpy most of the time for a long board, but picks up more swell, for the smaller days. Freshie will need to be about 6 ft though to get a half decent wave in Tresaith.

Welcome to eryc!

If you find yourself in Newgale, go in the Surf shop and ask for Wigs, then bug him all day, ask stupid question and get him to buy you a coffee.

Thank you.

Enjoy Wales though, I was brought up near Cardigan but now live down in Bournemouth with our amazing surf reef*

* not amazing at all.

ha, coffee! Good one!

Should be a wave at Fresh tomorrow, how clean it'll be with the 20mph southerlies I couldn't say.. May be worth checking out Mano.. Broad Haven North works well on a southerly if the swell's big enough, too, peach of a break on it's day.

Anyways, I wish you all the best with your search. And like Philly says, if you're ever in Newgale, come say hey and talk about the crap waves we get in Newgale and how I rarely surf north of Whitesands, it'll be awkward!

I think Fresh is gonna be big today!

11am edit - Hmm, I dunno any more, the swell appears to have dropped, and the wind's swung south-westerly and it's messy as all hell.

Did you look anywhere else?

What time did you go over? Don't forget, it's still light enough to surf 'til 6 o'clock now, so don't let the day job put you off!

headed over about 11 but had to be back in Cardigan for 3, so checked out Aberporth and Tresaith on my way home. Clean but very small!

Roll on the lighter evenings for sure!

had a fun sesh at Poppit this afternoon, some cheeky little waves coming through. Plus it wasn't too cold, so no need for a hood! Win.

No hood?! Newgale was FREEZING today, so much so my face hurt after every duckdive..

I've never surfed Poppit, in fact, I've never even seen a proper wave there! Do you surf the rivermouth?

well, it doesn't get that big there and it only works occasionally, but when it does it pretty good fun.

Bet it's working today!

"1 foot" according to MSW... Try head+ on sets more like! Had an alright one this morning at first light, few skelpings, few surf-like-a-'tard waves, and a few alright ones. Rather rippy though!

i'm extremely jealous that you have Newgale and Whitesands a stones throw away, the surf looks so much fun at the moment! Typical :(
Poppit has ankle high waves - ridiculous!

Freshwater west and Manorbier are actually much closer, but the majority of my surfer buddies live in north Pembs, so where I surf varies!
