I'm sure most of us wear gloves when hitting wicked hills (those who don't are dumb asses), I am included. However, currently, my gloves are just plain rawhide; they work well for protection, however, they do slow me down quite a bit and don't help much on turning etc. I was wondering: what do you put on the plams of your golves when attacking a hill?

Some friends of mine gave me some cowhide gloves from good ol' america, and i put some sliding blocks on them, so i could, err , slide, and also with them you can make really low and tight drop knee turns.

but answering your question, i have a chopping board on my palms, theyre velcro'd on because they do bloody wear out, especially in parks, you'll find because theres so little friction, your hands wont slow you down at all. Shortys done the same, and is also helps to ducktape the fingers because they get worn down.

I'm currently in the process of making me some sliding gloves.. I have the gloves, and the inner glove, and the ducktape.. all I need now is the chopping board and some velcro.

Was thinking of going super rustic as well, and instead of using ultra modern chopping boards.. Using wood instead, much cheaper, but probably wont last as long eh..

Think I need some money, and a trip into town.

Wigs, your going to have a hell of a time sewing the velcro to the glove, if i were you i would buy the really Heavy duty velcro in the place between the bridge and wilkinsons.

Wood, pff, that'll last 15 seconds.

Update here.. Got the chopping board today.. It's white, I wanted a different coloured one, but for £1.49, I'm not complaining, I have paint afterall. Blatantly pointless, painting something that will be continuously scraped across the floor.. but decks have it, so why can't my gloves eh?

Anyhow, was thinking of doing a Shorty, and just sticking the velcro to ducktape.. Or whatever he's done, seems to be working alright.

So my next free night, will be spent making me some sliding gloves, and not writing stories.

Stories of what huh? Which kind of chopping board did you get ? a big thick Meaty one like mine, or a little anorexic board?

What im going to do with my next sliding pad, is cut notches down the side, and note how long it takes each notch to dissapear.

Stories of holiday, which Dangerous keeps nagging me to write..

Anyhow, I got the anorexic board, as it was only £1.49, and its got 4 palm pads worth in it at least. Even I can afford that one.
What did you cut the pads with? A hacksaw?

And notches are a good idea, but my pad is quite thin, so it might be a bit of a challenge..

Righty, got the gloves done. They look a bit naff to be honest.. But who's caring eh.?

I used a jigsaw to cut the board in the end, because I'm lazy, and it was there. It did melt some of the board though, and it then set on the board, and had to be sanded off, with an electric orb sander of course. Most of the glove is ducktape, as I didn't sew the velcro on in the end, I just stuck it to ducktape, and it holds fine. If it falls off.. then I'll sew it on.

Think my next pair will be much better, more refined, more professional looking, and I shall write my evaluation when I finish this.. hah.

Anyhow, yeah, my gloves are done. Have a looksee:

Will add paint and graphics soon. Just you wait..

I don't see how that "design" could possibly work... You bought the chopboard to attach to the glove so you slide. Only you've wrapped ducktape around the chopboard to attach it to the glove... so when you slide, what do you think is going to be the first thing to make contact with the floor?... that's right. The Ducktape, which is supposed to be holding the chopboard.

Few slides and the ducktape will of been ripped off, and your chopboard will fall out. Good thinkin Wiggles.

Wrong. If you look closer at two of the photos, the first two, you'll see between the board and the glove, is some velcro, which holds the board to the glove. So when the ducktape wears through, which I'm fully aware it will do, the board will still be in place.

Have been pondering, about taking the finger pads off, as with them in place, I'm gonna haveta lift up my fingers to stop them wearing as fast. This lifting wont be one of my top priorities when riding, so I probably wont do it.. So who knows, they might not stay.

Want some different coloured ones too, brown is just so, boring. It's not even a nice brown, it's crap.

Wigs lifting is one of the main things to learn in sliding, i have a picture around here somewhere of a pro sliding with no finger protection at all, just a plastic pad on the base of his hand!

Browsing throughthe Lush site today, and I found some "Cliff Coleman Bear Paw Sliding Gloves", for £26.99..

Lush wrote:
A pair of solid leather gauntlet gloves with palm and finger sliding pads. The sliding pads are UHMW polyethylene (eh?), which basically means that they'll last for ages and ages. When they do wear out, they are easilty replaced since they are fixed onto the glove with a strong patch of velcro.

And here they are:

Don't know about you, but I think they look a bit naff, and pretty big to go with it. A big hefty pair of gloves like these, surely they'd do something to your agility, and maybe ability?

Hmm, Holdon, I think we should make and sell our own line of gloves, would only cost a fiver to make them, tenner tops. We'd be rich, and exploiting our own little niche market, maybe even market leaders if we do well enough icon_biggrin.gif...

What about if you just moisturise properly every night? I recommend Oil of Olay.

Yeah Pigs, those gloves dont look too exccelent, theyve got all that finger protection, but no thumb protection, and none atall for above your wrists. Plus that sliding pad looks minisqule(haha, havent heard that for a while!).

http://members.lycos.co.uk/virtua/Glove.JPG

Umm, my gloves i got free, they came from america and are made of dead cow, but i guess they would have cost about £5.
My chopping board cost me £5, but its top notch, and has another 3 pads left in it
Lots of ducktape from shorty,
Some thermoplastic (gumsheild stuff) for the fingers

The bastard about making sliding gloves is having to sew on the velcro, hmm, i might just write an article about sliding gloves, Definetly not wooth £25 though. Nice try Cliff Coleman

I'd probably buy them just to avoid having to sew velcro bit on all over again.

(Pigs your wondering? At marias party i shouted 'Wheres Pigs and Willy?' without realising i had created possibly the most exccelent nicknames ever!)

The articles written! (and i said i would!) HERE
