Hello,

My name is Hiren and I am 20 years old Asian living in the UK. I used to skate a little when I was 13 but over the last 2-3 years I have really wanted to learn how to "properly" skate. The other day I was flicking through the Uni newspaper when I saw a advert for the skate club (yes our uni has a skate club!). So I thought this was the perfect opportunity to learn.

Now it's not really accepted for guys like me to skate but I don't care, I might be too old to start learning but it looks like fun and ever since I saw a few Hawk / Burnquist videos I've wanted to try. (Not to mention constantly watching Gravity and X-Games).

So today I went out and brought my board and shoes. Vans skate shoes and a Casino Skates (local skateshop) board. I followed the excellent article you have on this site about choosing a board. So I got union trucks, the most plain deck the do, number 3 bearings and 7.5" width board.

I reallly like the forums you have here since they seem dead friendly.

It's never to late to start skating, to start anything infact (except maybe sucking your thumb).

So first off, welcome to the site.

What uni are you at ?

The best way to learn is to just get out there and start skating, you can have a gander through the trick tips to help you get started. Ollieing being the first thing you need to learn. Now, some people learn to ollie in a few days, others take months, you just got to keep at it.

Once you can ollie a respectable height, you can choose which way you want to go, make your own style, and just give everything a go.

To start off, it's a slow process, and if you haven't got any friends that skate, it's probably going to be pretty boring and lonely to begin with too.

Hope that hasn't put you off.

And looks like a good setup to begin on, so good luck.

Actually I come from Leciester but currently studying in Nottingham (although I make a fair few trips back).

Thanks for the welcome.

Edit/ Sorry didn't see the 2nd reply.

Yeah none of my friends skate hence one of the reasons I'm joining the club (first session on Friday).

I just had a quick go in my back yard, and this is going to sound stupid but what is the best way to move off from a still postion? I seem to be having trouble going in a forewards direction.

Cool.

What are you studying ?

Im probably off to southampton uni next year, starting a bit late so I will be an old fart compared to the rest of them. (i'll be coming onto 21)

A skate club down there would be awesome, otherwise Im probably going to have to give it up apart from trips back home.

A skate club does seem pretty cool, do you have like a meeting every now and again? and raise, money for parks n all?

Good On ya for re-starting skating, takes balls to start at that age. Enjoy it dude.

Well from what I can gather (not been to first meeting yet). We meet every Friday 4pm-6pm for a skate session in the uni sports hall. There will be a social event every few weeks and trips to a Sheffied Skate park, also they are now starting to construct ramps.

Oh and I almost managed to olie from a standing postioning. The board is taking quite a hammering so far let me tell you.

Hold the phone dude,

You'll be needing yourself a 'Stance', and this would either be Regular or Goofy. There's something in the 'Articles' section about it here...but anyways, stand on the board on a hill...and whichever stance you make it to the bottom of the hill with....thats the one!

Dont try and learn any tricks untill you've got balance down real well yah know, and the only way to increase balance, is to just ride man...go cruise some streets.

Good luck with it all, and keep posting with news on how you're getting on.

Dave - Thanks for the advice. I read the article you mentioned and tried the test but it's a little werid I'll try to explain.

Basically I'm right footed and right handed so that would make me regular. Except I when standing on the board regular feels all wrong and goofy feels right.

Then you are probably goofy.

Im right footed and both handed and regular, dave (i think), is also right handed and footed, but rides goofy.

welcome to eryc.co.uk!!!

you make my insides glow! in a good way!

Ok just got back from the first skate club meeting. Things went pretty well all the guys there seemed cool and most have been skating for 5-7years so I was the only newbie there. A few of the guys busted some great tricks and it was generally pretty fun.

I've managed to get stance correct now (regular seems to be working), also managed a few turns. Unfortunatly I've been ill with the flu for the last 2 days so as I tried an olie I hit the deck hard and my ankle felt damn bad. So I sat out for a while. Now the skate club is supposed to have the sports hall for 2hrs except at 5pm a bunch of footballers came in and it turned out the hall was double booked (I was later informed this happens a lot). So we were turfed out after only 1hr.

The rest of the guys went off to skate street, me not being confident to be unleashed onto public pavements yet decided to go home and continue to recover from flu.

All in all it was fun (depsite being the only person who can't stop or bust a trick) no-one seemed to mind although I did get ripped on a bit for the loudness of my board.

Awesome, sports hall could come in very handy, we don't have a park or anything indoors around here, so as soon as the rain comes, we will be unable to skate for months.

Good luck, and keep us updated with your progress.
