Hey, why is it that the common kickflip seems to be the trick that every new little skater seems to learn, and every non-skater asks if you can do? Ive been skating for nearly 2 years, and some of you guys have seen me on the site, and seen that i'm not and utter load of |genitalia|, yet i can't do kickflips! So, whever some little kid asks me if i can do kickflips i say "no" and they walk away with the misconception that i'm really crap. Stupid kids. Anyway, the main question is, Why does everyone seem to learn kickflips first?
p.s. Please fill in the poll!

No it wasn't the first trick I tried to learn, or did learn.
Ollie, shuvits, pop-shuvits, and finger flips all came long before I could kickflip. Took me 3 years to learn to kickflip.
Why does everyone seem to learn kickflips first?
Because without learning the basics of flipping the deck, you cannot progress to many other flip tricks. Varial, 360, hard flips all come after learning a kickflip (unless you find varials easier).

i always found the kickflip fascinating and couldnt see how it could be done, i loved half assed attempts at making the board spin like hell and still do! apart from that i was ollieing first.

I first learnt to cruise around, i used to roll down the paths and hills on my old one pop board.. those were the days.
But no, i learnt to Ollie and 180 first, and then i think i tried heelflips because i couldnt get kickflips. I been skating near 2 years now, and only got kickflips a few weeks ago. chances are if i tried one now i couldnt do it.. Same with shove-its as well, only just got them.

After ollies the first trick I learnt was fakie ollies. I'd rather learn how to do shove-its than kickflips. In fact, that's what I'm gonna do next. Or 180 ollies. I'd also like to rock to fakie on a thingy.

I'm the same as Wigs, just used to cruise around on my one tail board. In fact...i didnt even know about tricks or anything like that. Not untill this guy called Gavin came along, he showed us the way of the ollie...and we were all like "Holy s***!", So uhh..yeah, first was cruising around and down hills, and doing things like powerslides n stuff, then came the ollie, which took Months to do (and was near enough impossible for me on a one pop tail board).
We didnt know about the Kickflip till about a year after skating around, when a dude called Paul, just popped one in front of us. He was near enough 19 at the time, and used to skate all the time as a kid. I never thought about learning it then though, as i knew i couldnt...so i moved onto the 90 degree ollie, which i got in the first day! well chuffed, though thats given me some major problems now.... as most of the time when i ollie, my natural instinct will be to turn the board 90...and thats no good. I didnt learn the 180 till a good few months after that.
Better get to the point... I tried the kickflips many a time, but could never do it. I eventually learnt Varial Flips first, and gave up on the kickflip. I still can't really kickflip, and have only landed a few. Though i used to be able to do them about 2 years ago....I've spent some nights trying to learn it again...but all attempts were in vain.
So..uhh no, the kickflip was defintely not the first trick i learnt. And i hate those little kids who try and learn it first off...they're the ones living in the Tony Hawks Pro Skater world, and will never learn true style unless they start from the very basics. I'm Done

I'm the same as you dave, cos i learnt 180's after the ollie, nearly all my ollies are s*** till recently. after the 180 i got pop shuvits, then heelflips recently (flip tricks only). i've been doing bonlesses and stuff sicne i saw some dude do a 180 boneless, anyways, i still can't kickflip, so there! oh yeah, and its unlikley that id be skating now if i hadn't have played Tony hawks 2! - i watched the videos at the end and thought "I wanna do that!" so i did!

Exact same here, dunno why it took me so long though. I learnt ollies, then tried 180's (and failed) and then shuv-its. I found I was not very good at street skating, then decided I wanted to take up freestyle because it looked like fun.
I think it's stupid when kids learn to kickflip before they can ollie.

It took me a day to pop an ollie. All of christmas day in fact, on my brand new argos board!! I then just ollied up and down curbs for about a year. This year i started shuv its and 180 ollies. i am also quite good at 50.50, nosegrinds and 5.0s. I cant land kickflips tho.
Also if it wasnt for Tony Hawks pro skater i wouldnt be skating today! (but i do think it sucks!!)

I first learnt to drop off a curb, then loads of wierd stuff like jumping off the board as you go along and bonusing it and stuff like that.
I always thought flips were amazing and so hard defying gravity stuff. How wrong was i!

i dont learn kickflips first. thats the hardest basic trick of them all. i learned the fs shove-it first, and then progressed to 180 ollie and hardflip.

Hmmm yeah fair enough comment but then again they are all variations of the kickflip and not all exactly the same... so IMO anyway they are kickflips...

Could somebody please tell me what is the difference between a kickflip and an old school kickflip???
When I started skating, Rodney Mullen had only just invented kickflips. Back then there was a type of skateboarding called freestyle, (basically flatland - hence the wierd mindblowing stuff that Mullen has down in these days). Over the years 'Street' boards got thinner and fundamentally double tailed, and freestyle disappeared and became what I guess is the basics of modern street skating. My first trick..... An acid drop off a park bench!!!! 2nd was a beanplant off of said bench... The trick that inspired me to start skating - a wall ride from flat ground by my Mentor.

Freestyle is still prevalent today.
With an old school kickflip there is no ollie. As you're moving along you flip the board over. It physically moves to the left or right some way. In fact, have a look at this:
