Let's make a horror movie.
Let's make a horror movie. We got a camera, our twisted imaginations and no money. So where do we start?
Fist we've got to decide what type of horror movie this is. There are a number of choices; we could have a monster type animal, like a mutated half-human beast, or a psychological thriller, like the blair witch, but this would be an obvious choice for a no budget movie. Then we come to the classic, not as much used now, but your basic psycho. Who, through years of child hood misery blah, blah, blah...wants to kill people. No hard story line needed, you don't even have to put why he does this, just that he does. So we've chosen the psycho route.
Now having a very low budget to make a horror film, you gotta make a very big choice. To try and cover up the low budget or 'cheapness',which can make it look pathetic or over acted, or use the 'cheapness' to add a comical side for the ordinance. You can do this by ripping off other movies, which you will be criticised for, or use lines in different scenes, at chilling times to create humour I.e. when in day of the dead, the captain is getting his legs ripped off buy zombies, he yells "choke on umm...!"
There are other ways to add humour, like creating an affect no-one would expect a 16 year olds movie to have, i.e. have a man going to be killed, put a dead pig in his cloths and shoot it with a shotgun, edit it, and its done.
Or use real blood or outer parts of meat. Humour will also be created if you know the people in the film. You may not think it would be funny to see their eye taken out by a folk in real life, but to see this on a film and knowing there acting, I don't know how but it just seems funny.
Actors, you've got no money so who do you ask? You're none actuarial mates, that's who. And because the only acting they've ever done is as a camel in a nativity play when they where 3, you get them to play them selves. Playing them selves is quite harder than it seams because you're trying not to act. Confusing.
With playing them selves you've got to put them into the atmosphere they are used to and the places they are use usually found and familiar with. In this case it would be the school, in the evening, down town and so on.
Location, the places we shoot the movie. Now we have the actors and know where they hang around, we have to write a story line and the murders around it. Looking at key features in the location and using the location its self, we can create a bit more humour. People will relate to this place i.e. "that's where i went to school, that's to shop I got my shoes, that's the ally I lost my virginity..."
Now all the actors have been sorted, and the location, we have to sort out the killer. Because the actors are playing themselves, you can't use your other mate as the killer, well you can, just it will take the realisticness out off it.
So weave given our killer a mask, I know..."you stole that from scream...!" no we haven't. I've never even seen scream. And Im sure they stole it off something else. This will also allow us to hide the identity of the killer till the end. Where we can just take the mask of anybody's head, with out having to get them to act. More humour, like if the killer is a granny, and all the way through the film she's been running about, and jumping off roofs.
So that's all we've got to work with so far. We do plan to make this movie, and would be happy with any help or advice to make it funnier.
Cheers, shorty.
